They should be narrow in their growth. For a privacy hedge, choose evergreens like junipers, cypresses or arborvitae, or broadleaf evergreen trees that don't lose their leaves in the winter. These make better wind breaks, too. For a formal look, you want to get trees of a reasonably short natural stature, so they can be easily maintained with hedge shears.

Some hedges are purely ornamental and others function as a wind or noise barrier. Often hedges serve as a visual barrier. Evergreen trees are a good choice for hedges because they are very full, easy to maintain and stay green throughout the year.

Privit bushes make great hedges as they have shiny green leaves and very pleasant smelling white flowers. Burning bushes are also great hedges as they turn a beautiful red color in the fall. The only problem is that they grow quickly and you need to cut them back often.
