Alopecia is a hereditary autoimmune disorder that results in hair loss. Stress plays a factor much in this disease like many other autoimmune disorders in that it releases the hormone cortisol, prompting the body to feel it is in a "fight or flight" situation. This results in many of the other systems stopping production, including hair follicles.

Stress only plays a role in alopecia if you pull your hair as a result of stress. Else, there is not much evidence stress can cause alopecia. Medical conditions such as hypothyroidism or fungal infection ay be a more likely culprit.
