Either a compromise must be reached, or the relationship is not going to be a successful one. If one partner is absolutely adamant about having or not having children, it is unfair to stay in the relationship. Worse is having the children, then insisting that you didn't want then anyway.

Communication between partners is essential on this important issue. Over a period of weeks or months spend time talking about desires, fears, and concerns for the future. Typically, misunderstandings about what having children will entail will come to light. There may be fears about who will take care of the children and what responsibilities will be divided between partners.
