What should I consider when buying a used car with high mileage?

I found a great deal on a used car but the mileage is very high.

You should consider potential cost of repairs that might be needed in order to maintain the car. New breaks, shock absorbers, belt replacement might cost more than the car itself.

Have a reputable mechanic go over it from bumper to bumper before you buy, so you know what you are really getting and what repairs might be in the future.

One, if the oil's been changed faithfully, that makes the most difference. Have somebody check the cylinder compression -- it should be strong and consistent. Replace plugs and all filters; be prepared to replace belts, timing chain, water pump, fuel pump, and tires. Anticipate transmission wearing out. And good luck.

I would suggest making sure it comes with an extended warranty and ask how was the vehicle maintained. Make sure it has been taken care of.

Keep in mind that the more miles are on a car, the closer it is to wearing out. High mileage cars are typically more expensive to own than lowermileage ones, since they need to be repaired more often. Also, high mileage cars require extra care, like more frequent oil changes.
