What should I expect from fractured sternum healing?

I guess most people get a fractured sternum in car accidents. Your doctor probably will explain to you what you can expect. You will most likely have to go through physical therapy for a while and have some physical limitations placed on you so you don't aggravate your condition.

Pain, bruising and some swelling are all to be expected during the process of healing from a fractured sternum. Analgesics and other pain medications are usually prescribed. Talk to your doctor If the pain is very severe because doctors will sometimes do a intercostal nerve block to aid the patient.

I had one years ago. I was told to use ice packs but I found that heat worked best. It WAS absolutely painful.  add a comment

Pain! Pain! More Pain! From what I understand the biggest problem that arises from recovery of a fractured sternum is that it hurts like heck. It will improve on a daily basis and your doctors will make sure that you will be as comfortable as possible post op. Good Luck!
