The time for this is late fall to early spring. Dig a 2' hole twice the diameter of roots. Loosen soil around sides and bottom of hole and place roots comfortably. After covering roots pat and smooth soil to remove any air pockets. Water well and do not fertilize now.

To root a new apple tree, you take a cutting of an old apple tree and dip it in rooting hormone. After this, you should plant the cutting a few inches into the soil so the roots have room to grow and just keep it well watered, it will grow!

Apple trees require full sun, and consult your County Extension about your soil quality- you need a proper PH balance and soil nutrients. Dig a hole twice the diameter of the roots and 2' deep. Loosen surrounding soil for root penetration. Do not fertilize initially to avoid root burn.

Although there are several ways to go about it, it's a pretty difficult (and long) process to root apple trees. I think the easiest and least stressful process is to take the cut branch, bag it up in plastic with good balanced soil, a little water and tie it up.
