Until it is two weeks old, it is very difficult if not impossible to sex kittens. After that, a female kitten will have an elongated slit below but close to the anus. A male kitten will have a small dot (the penis bud), and this will be further away from the anus than the female's genitals.

Kittens can be sexed by looking under the tail and if need be stroking downward. Females will have two openings that look like an exclamation point, and males will have two openings that look like two dots at some distance. Also, most males will have the round shapes common to any scrotum.

When cats are young (before the male's testicles have descended) it can be very hard to tell unless you know what you're looking at. For a female, below the anus there is more of a "u" shape, and for males, there is more of an exclamation mark.
