There are stains available that are made for exactly that purpose that you can purchase, such as 100% acrylic latex stains. Just like cedar decks, cedar houses must be prepared before you stain them. Do any repair work and make sure you clean it thoroughly and dry before staining. Priming and applying two coats is recommended.

Solvent-borne, oil-based semi-transparent stains are the best for wood that is fully exposed to the elements. This will protect the cedar from weather longer on roughshawn wood. This will allow the wood to breathe and not peel. These stains are a mixture of pigments, water repellants and fungicides.
