Delaware was the first state to ratify the Constitution and thus join the union. Delaware was followed in succession by Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, South Carolina, New Hampshire, Virginia, New York, North Carolina, and Rhode Island.

The first state to ratify the U.S. Constituion was Delaware, which ratified it on December 7, 1787. This distinction is the basis of Delaware's nickname -- "the first state."
