The roles of women were very limited. Their job was to stay at home and perform domestic chores. The cooked, often over an open hearth, took care of children, cleaned, and spent a lot of time sewing and making clothes. They were usually not educated, as women were not thought to have as much intelligence as men.

Puritan women were the moon to the male sun. The were helpmates to the dominant male figure in the household. Their work was seen as different but equally important as males to the family endeavor, but shaped by the requirements of child birth and rearing. Intellectually and spiritually, however, their role was total submission to male domination.
