What were medieval nobles like?

Though they numbered few, medieval nobles held most of the wealth, land, and power during the Middle Ages. Outside of the clergy, medieval noblemen were the only literate, educated people. They lived in crude castles and manors, which while still drafty and basic by modern standards, were still far more comfortable than peasant living quarters.

Medieval nobles were landowners, often wealthy, and considered among the ruling class. They were answerable to and paid taxes to the nation's sovereign, such as the King of Queen.
