Question by  dingle (34)

What would happen to require the gas tank straps to be replaced?

I took my car in for service and they told me that the gas tank straps are bad.

The only two things I can think of are damage and rust. If something under the car impacts the gas tank, it could damage the tank straps. The other thing is rust, particularly if the car is driven up north where they salt the roads. If the tank was ever removed for service, they could have been reinstalled wrong.

they are made of metal and sit underneath of your vehicle , so if you live by the ocean or where it snows or have severe weather chances are they rusted away. ask the tech.

this is usually caused by the strapps rusting from regular wear and tear " 2000 and older" or it could be from the car bottoming out or scraping on speed bumps, pot holes, anything that would hit the bottom of the car,but that would still take some time to wear them down to the point of replacement

They could possible be rusted from corrosion or the bolts going into frame are broke.Either one causing the problem, they may as well replace the straps and the bolts to keep from bring it back to replace the other.

Gas tank straps are just flat metal strap with rubber strips attached to them. Overtime the can corrode causing the metal to weak. The rubber can also eventually harden and even fall off. It something where to hit the gas tank from below the strap may also have been damaged.

Well for straps to be bad they would either have to be corroded or damaged in some way. You should ask the mechanic himself why that the straps had to be replaced. This may just be a shop trying to get more one out of you. If not then he should be able to provide a valid explanation.

These are rubber straps in place. They can dryrot or the can snap very easily. There are also metal clips on the end. The clips can give way too. Vibration and corrosion can cause either the clips or the strap to fail. It happens more commonly than you might think.
