I would suggest long panel curtains one on either side of the window, and one in the middle, splitting the windows. You can tie the curtains back with a coordinating sash, which looks particularly nice. This type of window treatment looks very clean and sharp, as opposed to a valance, which can sometimes look loose and sloppy.

You should try some with, thin curtains, because these allow the light to come into the room. During the night, when the light is on, you could use a second pair of thicker, dark drapes.

Try flowly, light-colored drapes to create a romantic feel. Living rooms are not especially private places so window treatments might not be necessary if the finishing on the double window is nice.

If you want privacy but a lot of light- use a set of sheers with curtains that close in the evening. If you have a country style home, you can use plantation shutters. Mini blinds are inexpensive, but not very formal, so you could add a cornice and drape panels.

The best thing for a double window is to have double curtain rods. The one closer to the window should have transparent net or tissue curtain so that in summer light flows in,and the outer one should be in heavy material so that in winters it keeps you cozy.
