Mucous plug is one of the first developments and changes in the body during pregnancy. Its formation begins within the days after becoming pregnancy and usually covers the cervix for the entire duration of pregnancy. Loss of mucous plug and the bloody show discharge indicate the nearing onset of labor

The mucus plug begins to form as soon as the blastocyst (very young embryo) has successfully implanted. This is roughly five days following fertilization of the egg with a sperm.
