Throughout the 1970s, asbestos was finally recognized by the United States government to cause health problems of those who have handled and lived around it. Asbestos was banned in 1989 from any residential, commercial or industrial use. Much asbestos has been replaced by healthy alternatives but has not nearly been completely removed from every building in the United States.

Asbestos was outlawed in building code in 1978, meaning that the law banning it was created in 1978. However, this law also allowed for Contractors and Builders to use up remaining supplies, until 1986.
