The Enlightenment Era was an 18th century philosophical belief that human reasoning was essential to understanding the world and human behavior through science and rational thinking with no regard to religious teachings. The 17th century "Age of Reason" is thought to have ushered in the "Enlightenment Era" which seemed to have spread around the world almost simultaneously.

The 18th century is usually considered the Age of Enlightenment in Western Europe. Some consider the Enlightenment Era started earlier, during the second half of the 17th century, in 1687, when Isaac Newton published "Principa Mathematica', or even as early as 1637, with Descartes' "Discourse on the Method".

It wasn't a set time period, but a rough grouping of philosophical, economic, and political thought starting somewhere in the early to mid 17th century and lasting until the modern era.
