Where did the saying, "Let them eat cake" come from?

This is attributed to Marie Annoinette, who didn't speak English and didn't say that exactly, but it was a consise way of summing up the feelings of the people against a leadership that they saw as out of touch with the normal day to day life of the people she ruled.

The saying "Let them eat cake" has been attributed to Marie Antoinette for some time, allegedly referring to her response when told that the people had no bread to eat. However, there is no evidence that she said this, and some believe that the words were stated by Marie-Thérèse, wife of Louis XIV. Thus we may never know for sure.
