The Merovingian bloodline stems mostly from the territory known as modern-day France, historically corresponding with the territories of Gaul. Their most powerful and influential era is considered c. 450 (reign of Childeric) to its fall in c. 751 when Childeric III fell to Pepin the Short.

Merovingian comes from the Latin word Merovingi (sons of Merovich). Merovich was the leader of the Salian Franks in present day France.
