Answer by  Clement (1453)

Many early French colonies in North America were short-lived. More important colonies include well-known cities such as Quebec and Montreal in Canada; Detroit, St. Louis, Baton Rouge and New Orleans in the United States; and Port-au-Prince in Haiti as well as the ones on the Lesser Antilles, including Guadeloupe, Marie-Galante, Martinique, St. Barthélemy and (part of) St. Martin.

Today we know it as Canada, which is why French is spoken in Quebec. The French owned the lands west of the Mississippi, but there were no major colonies there.
