Opiates should not be used, due to their addictive properties, for the treatment of chronic back pain. Vicodin, if properly monitored, would be the preferred medicine. Both medicines are typically prescribed for the treatment of acute (short-term) back pain for no more than two weeks.

Vicodin is going to be much more effective as it is an opiate pain killer, but also more addictive. You need to be careful when taking any pain medications and watch out for drug interactions. Never drink alcohol on these medications. As always it is best to consult your doctor about these issues.

Vicodin is opiate based, so as a pain killer it will work better but can be addictive. I believe Darvocet has been under investigation and may have been taken off the market. Any type of pain killer can be addictive. Go with the advise of your doctor. Daily exercise has helped my lower back pain without medication.

Vicodin is a better pain killer for most, although Darvocet does work. If you end up with Vicodin, ask for Norco, as it's higher in painkiller and lower in acetaminophen.
