Which is grammatically correct: afterward or afterwards?

Both are acceptable, although "afterward" is preferred. It is an adverb. This word sometimes gets confused with "afterword," which is a noun, and refers to the follow-up of a story: "I read the afterword and learned that things worked out well for everyone."
