In my opinion, the piano contributes the most to developing intellect, mainly because of the multitasking required to read two clefs of music.

Playing an instrument does not make a child wiser - but the skills learned from playing a lot of instruments improve dexterity and co-ordination, especially if the instrument uses both hands at once. People find that piano playing and guitar playing are useful, but you can also acquire similar skills by learning to touch type.

All music encourages development and utilizes both right- and left-side brain development. The piano is a great instrument because it involves both right and left hands and the largest range of notes.

The child becomes smarter if he plays with interest on the piano or on the harmonium or the flute. But he must take interest in doing so.

Being involved in learning music supports learning and ability in other areas of the curriculum. Help your child pick an instrument he or she is likely to stick with rather than focusing on a particular instrument. If the child starts to get really interested, supplement lessons on the instrument with lessons on the piano/keyboard.
