France was divided, and the French had two leaders during WWII. The official goverment, called the Vichy government, which surrendered to and collaborated with the German Nazi leadership, was led by Marshall Petain. The resistance movement, working against the Nazis and in exile in Britain, was led by General Charles De Gualle.
