The track runs counter-clockwise because it is more natural for the human body. Blood flow naturally happens in the body from left to right. Running counter-clockwise allows the body to continue this process, whereas running clock-wise forces the body to do the opposite. Therefore, clockwise running is more likely to unnecessarily tire the runner.

Due to the fact that most people are right handed they have developed a stronger left leg. This makes it easier to travel counterclockwise. Also for spectators it makes sense for the tracks to run this direction becuase everything is usually read from left to right so it would make more sense to have these tracks running in that direction.

The heart is on the left side. By running counter-clockwise, a centrifugal force is created, which helps with circulation. Running in a clockwise direction impedes circulation. In the old days, a "health official" made sure that merry-go-rounds ran counter-clockwise to prevent health problems.
