Why are the Olympic summer and winter games in the same year?

Before 1994, the summer and winter Olympics were held in the same year. The last year to have them together was 1992. They were split into different years because it was hard to plan and stage two large events in the same year.

The summer and winter games are no longer in the same year. This was changed starting in 1994 with the Lillehammer, Norway Winter games in so that there is an olympic event every two years.
