Why did colonist not agree with the sugar act of 1764?

It was an effort to undercut Americans from buying molasses from the French West Indies by halving the tax on English molasses. The downside was that the new taxes were to be strictly collected and taxes were added to other imports. The act also regulated exports of lumber and iron.

Food was a large part of the economy at the time, which was in a depression. The economy took a hit, and the tax made smuggling more difficult.
