It's about free will. Some theologians say it was a test; others hold that God intended for humans to eat from the tree so they'd recognize their need for God.

According to the Bible. God put the tree of knowledge of good and evil in the Garden of Eden as a test of faith to Adam and Eve. Of course, as the story goes, Eve was tempted by the serpent to eat the apple, and subsequently convinced Adam to eat from it as well.
