Why did my home central air conditioner unit freeze up?

The most common cause is poor air flow caused by a dirty air filter. Reduced air flow causes the suction pressure to drop and the corresponding temperature of the evaporator coil gets below the freezing point. The condensation (moisture in the air) freezes on the coil instead of draining away.

Have the unit serviced by a proffessional, The coil needs cleaning or the pressures are not proper. I dont advise trying to clean the coils yourself they can be damaged easily. Then it gets very expensive to replace the evaporater coil.

You might have a leaky line connected to your central AC unit. Once the freon spills from the pipe line onto the casing it will cause it to freeze.

Your central air conditioner unit probably froze up because it is low on refrigerant or charge. This could be caused by a leak in your system.

If your central air is starting to freeze up pretty often then will need to heat it up right now.
