This could just be a habit. However, if it's excessive and interferes with your daily functioning, you should see a professional. You may have obsessive compulsive disorder.

If you count everything it is possible that you have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. If this is the case, the reason you count everything is by doing so, it makes you feel safer.

If the way you count everything gets in the way of your regular daily routine, you may have Obsessive Compulsive Dissorder, which is mostly caused by anxiety or fear.

You could very well have an undiagnosed case of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Some people with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, known as OCD, tend to count things over and over or count everything they see. They can also have to eat things in groups or having things in a certain order. They will count their possessions and often know when somethings missing.
