Your question is of an existential nature, and so are no right or wrong answers. Mostly, human beings name things, includings seasons, as a way to model the world in convenient categories so that everyone can communicate more quickly and easily. The seasons don't necessarily need names, but it makes basic communication easier, and orienting ourselves in reality more sensible.

To specify a certain time of year, that is longer than a month. Or to speak about the weather at a certain time of year. The seasons are different and distinct, and for that reason alone, they should have different names. It makes a difference because simply stating the month or day does not specify the entire period.
