Good Question, Fish are attracted to the movement of the live earthworm and will only be excited about a free meal if it s a fresh one, you wouldn't eat a rotten apple. Happy Fishing!

The earthworms have to move around and attract fish, not to mention have a scent of its own, rather than a dead animal with a dead or no smell.
