Scalp knots may be lymph nodes that have grown in response to any insect bite or infection. Some types of scalp knots occur due to infection of hair follicles called folliculitus. The lesions may be itching, painful and swollen.

These may be sebacious cysts from the oil buildup and blockage of hair follicles. These should be checked by her pediatrician to rule out any other possibilities. You speak like there are several knots instead of just one, and I would also rule out other possibilities such as her scratching due to lice, causing small areas of inflammation.

If everyone were to shave their head, you would find that everyone has small knots on their scalp. For the most part these are just small, fatty cysts. Normally harmless. Should they become annoying, a dermatologist can remove them.

If your daughter colors her hair or bleaches it, the knots can be caused by a chemical in the coloring product she uses.
