Why is a fig newton called a fig newton?

The first fig newton cookie was made over a hundred years ago in Massachussets and named for the nearby town of Newton. So, the original cookies were called Newtons, but once they became popular they added the word "fig" to the name.

It's named after the town of Newton, Massachusetts by Charles Roser, who patented the machine that made the snack cakes. There is also an organic version by Newmans Own called Fig Newmans

The cookies were originally named The Newton after the Massachusetts town located near Kennedy Biscuits, the original mass producer of Fig Newtons.

A fig newton is called that because of the fig in it as you stated, but originally the cookie was just called the newton, according to the history of the fig newton the inventor may have named it after Sir Isaac Newton, but that is just a story and we have know way to know if it is true.
