As hermit crabs grow their shells can become too small for their bodies, so he is looking for a new, bigger shell to move into which you should provide.

You probably need to provide the hermit crab with a new, slightly larger shell. It probably has outgrown the current one.

Hermit crabs come out of their shells when the shell they are in become to small for them. Make sure you have a bigger one available.

Hermit crabs hang out of their shells when they grow too big and need a bigger shell. Also dead crabs hang out because nothing is holding them in any more.

It is either dead, dying, or it needs a bigger shell. Hermit crabs will outgrow their shells and will need to find larger ones as they grow.
