Why is Texas called the Lone Star State?

Texas got its nickname from the period of time that Texas declared its independence from Mexico and was known as the Republic of Texas and the first flag for the Republic Of Texas had a lone star on it that was simply labeled as Texas which was approved as the flag in 1836.
