The name "mouse" comes from a nickname given to the device by workers at the Stanford Research Institue. They said this because they were suggesting that the cable found on a computer mouse was similar to the tail of a real one.

Early versions of a mouse (before Macintosh made them popular in 1984) used to have a cord at the back end, resembling a tail. It's said that it was coined by the Stanford Research Institute. Aside from that, they are small and longer than it is wide, with the rough shape of a mouse of course.
