Why is the route of administering drugs so important?

It matters because different drugs are best absorbed by the body in different ways. Some drugs work best if they are injested, while others are more effective if introduced directly into the bloodstream. It can also affect how fast a medication will work.

Drugs that are given by mouth should not be destroyed by stomach acid and also should be absorbed from the gut. If not they need to be given as injections. Injections start acting faster and are more reliable and hence preferred when immediate action is needed.

The quicker the drug gets to the problem area, the quicker the patient begins to feel better. Oral drugs, for example, are usually absorbed by the body, slower than injections. Injections go directly into the blood stream.

With injectable drugs, some drugs are absorbed better and more slowly if they are injected into a muscle whereas some, as those injected into an IV are better put directly into the blood stream for faster absorption. And obviously, oral drugs absorb best through the stomach and intestines.

The way in which drugs are administered can alter their effectiveness and also how quickly they begin to work. For instance, an intravenous administration of a drug would begin to take effect much quicker than through an oral dosage.
