Why would a doctor order a kidney sonogram?

My daughter has to have one and we don't know why.

Kidney sonograms are kidney ultrasounds. They are mainly ordered to find kidney stones, also known as renal calculi. Your doctor should have told you this.

Doctors use sonograms to "see" inside the kidneys (they work in the same way as ultrasounds for pregnant women, for instance). The most common usage is for the diagnosis of kidney stones, but they can also identify cysts, tumors, swellings (which usually pinpoint an infection) and so on.
