Why would they give my dog 40 mg of prednisone?

Prednisone is used in dogs to treat Auto Immune disorders. It's used quite commonly and the most common use for the drug is to treat allergies or asthma in dogs. They may have paired it with eye drops or a shampoo. It can also be used to calm excessive itching or even kidney disorder.

Dogs are prescribed Prednisone (40mg) for either chronic inflammatory conditions such as arthritis or acute conditions such as skin allergies. Just as in people, the Prednisone relieves the inflammation which causes some of the pain, itching, and soreness that your dog is experiencing. Hopefully, the vet would not prescribe 40 mg of prednisone. That is an extremely high doseage and would only be tolerated by a large dog. The use of prednisone in dogs is the same as in people--to stop the immune system from attacking itself.
