Adults have between 3. 5 and 6. 5 quarts of blood, depending on their size. Blood circulates under pressure and carries oxygen and nutrients throughout the body. When the circulation is interrupted, blood escapes, pressure drops and the body is deprived. How, why, how much and from where blood is lost determines how long the individual can survive.

Death due to blood loss is called Exsanguination. If more than 40% of blood volume is lost, the loss will lead to death. For an adult male this is approximately 2 litres of blood.

A loss of blood more than 4 pints can be fatal and life threatening. Sudden loss of blood is more dangerous when compared to that of gradual loss. It may affect the brain or other internal systems.

There is no set amount that can say how much blood can be loss before problems or death. It depends on size of person, health (anemia) and medications taken.
