Being engaged is not a legal term. It does not give you any legal rights/standing - it is merely a promise to wed.

Being engaged has no legal status. An engagement is simply a promise between two people to marry, and depending on where you live, your fiancé will likely have to divorce their current spouse first to marry you. If you and your fiancé believe that you're engaged, then that's what matters.
