Magnesium and Sodium are both metals. Both are highly reactive and will produce bubbles on contact with water. Magnesium is a hard metal whereas sodium is very soft.

Both of these are rare earth metals. Magnesium burns escpecially hotly, its white hot and cannot be put out with water. The water will actually dissaociate into hydrogen and oxygen. Sodium dissociates so quickly in water it causes an exposion.

Magnesium and Sodium are elements, which means they are the one of the many basis of things, so stuff doesn't make them up, they make up stuff. But if you want to get down to it magnesium contains 12 protons and 12 electrons and sodium contains 11 protons and electrons.
