What does it mean if I cannot open a Word document by double clicking the file?

It might be incompatible with your version of microsoft word. Word may not be the default application to open that file. Try to Right click and choose open with and then selecting word may do the trick. Try opening word first then use the menu to open your file. The file could be corrupted.

This means that your computer lost the association of .doc with word or that word got uninstalled on your PC. Reinstalling office will fix this.

Most likely the file association is broken. Right click a word document and select "open with...". Select Word and check the always open this file with this program checkbox.

it means one of these things 1. your word document maybe broken because of a virus attack,improper decompression, or bad hardisk 2. your word document maybe protected by it's creator
