Myelitis is an inflammation of the spinal cord. Transverse means that a specific section of the spinal cord is involved across the full width. Over time, transverse myelitis can destroy the insulation of the nerve cell fibers, which causes an interruption of nerve signals to the rest of the body.

Transverse myelitis is when both sides of a section of the spinal cord becomes inflamed. These inflammation attacks can damage myelin which is the fatty insulate that covers nerve cell fibers. This can lead to nervous system scars. Symptoms start with lower back pain, muscle weakness, or strange sensations in the toes or fingers.

The term myelitis describes inflammmation of spinal cord and transverse describes the position of inflammation which may be across both sides of one level or segment. Inflammation destroys myelin,fatty insulating substance that covers nerve cell fibers. The segment of spinal cord which is affected determines which part of the body is affected.
