Your dog may have eaten something from the garbage, or something off your floor, check his throat for any foreign object and remove. Your dog may also have asthma. Test him by holding his nose shut for several seconds, he will respond my forcing a full breath from his mouth.

Excessive pulling on the collar while on a leash can irritate the trachea and cause coughing. The dog may have an infectious disease such as kennel cough. Serious diseases of the heart such as congestive heart failure can also cause a cough.

After you check to make sure nothing is stuck in the dog's throat, you might want to look into whether the dog has a collapsed or collapsing trachea (windpipe), not uncommon especially in "pushed-in face dogs" like pugs. It causes coughing and gagging.

Your dog may have worms it may have heart worm as well and if the dog has worms very bad you will need the vet to worm for you then you csn set up a worming rigimine and as far as heart worm alot of dogs have it but the only way they can find it is by the vet.
